In the heart of the Cambrian mountains, the Silver Mountain Experience is not only a fantastic family day out for all ages, but boasts breathtaking views of the rolling hills beyond. Situated ten minutes from Aberystwyth, this place came highly recommended, so we had to check it out. On arrival, we were met by incredibly welcoming staff who provided us with a clipboard full of fun, complimentary trails and quizzes, suitable for all ages.
The Black Chasm tour was outstanding. It was the perfect balance of scary, but not terrifying, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The tour lasted around an hour and felt incredibly good value; we were spectacularly entertained by the Lady of the Mountain. Her old folk tales of mythical creatures and superstitions captivated us, and it was really quite informative. If you only wanted to do one tour, we recommend you make it this one, purely for the entertainment factor, as it will keep everyone fascinated, big and small.
After a light but appetising lunch, we began the Miner’s Life tour which explained the reasoning behind urban legends. The tour provided an in-depth review of the day-to-day trials of a miner, as well as explaining the architectural structures. Our guide, Tessa, was clear, informative and ensured our personal care at all times, continually asking if we had any questions, and answering without hesitation. The tour guides work alongside local historians of the area, striving to always expand their knowledge of the silver and lead mines.
Even after the tours were over, we still had a lot of ground to cover, exploring the surface attractions, and we couldn't leave without saying goodbye to the creatures up at Woo Hoo Woods. We found so many extra things to keep us entertained, such as the Giant's Button Puzzle, as well as den building and even a Tangle-Foot maze. Make sure you watch out for protruding tree roots as you make your way round the woods completing the Miner’s Trail quiz, or the Kindling’s Treasure Trail for the little ones (or big kids at heart).
Back down at the centre of the site, take part in gem panning by purchasing a small bag of rocks from reception - you may find you've struck gold. Paddle in the stream or exercise your dam building skills before enjoying a picnic by the stream. Let the little ones burn off some energy on the outside adventure play area, or perhaps they'd prefer to spend time building sandcastles in the shady pit or experimenting with the water play.
