Reserves near the Trefeddian
Ynys-Hir
Directions: The reserve is situated between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth. Turn off the A487 in the village of Eglwys-Fach and proceed for 1 mile to the car park.
Set on the south side of the Dyfi esturay, this reserve mixes the delights of a Welsh oak woodland with the wet grasslands and salt marshes of the estuary. Spring is a wonderful time to visit the woodland when it is full of bird song and spring flowers.
The reserve is open from 9am - 9pm or dusk if earlier. The visitor centre is open daily 9am - 5pm from April to October and 10am - 4pm from November to March (closed Mondays and Tuesdays)
There is a car parking fee of £2 for non RSPB members.
Mawddach Woodlands
Directions: Travel on the A483 towards Dolgellau, at the village of Penmaenpool turn towards the toll bridge. The information centre is in the old signal box near the car park.
Coed Garth Gell is a sessile oak woodland on steep slopes, supporting a wide community of woodland birds. There is an area of heath land at the top of the reserve. Arthog Bog is a fragment of raised bog with wet woodland predominating.
The reserve is open all year round. Entrance is free although donations are welcome.
Lake Vyrnwy
Directions: From the Trefeddian drive to Machynlleth onto the A470 then A458 then turn onto B4395 to Llanwyddyn. At the dam turn left, then left at the end of the dam, the visitor centre is on the right.
Surrounded by stunning scenery, moorland, forests, meadows, mountain streams, waterfalls and crags this is the ideal place for a keen birdwatcher.
Open from 1st April to 31st October daily 10.30am to 5.30pm. 1st November to 24th December daily 10.30am - 4.30pm. 1st January to 31st March (weekends only) 10.30am - 4.30pm
